Urban Musical Game
Category : projects

The idea for this project was to control music and sounds with a simple school ball. The motion of the ball bouncing or flying around on the playground is captured live and repurposed as giant musical gestures that mashup pre-recorded tracks and sound effects. Various game scenarios were tried : direct sonification of existing games (like basketball or volleyball), free gestures with multiple balls to create a band, or custom ones where the gameplay relies on sound only (think of the musical chairs for example).

The project was presented to the public in Paris, in a public place near the Pompidou Center, from june 17 to 26th as part of the 2011 Futur en Seine innovation festival.

I contracted for both Ircam and Phonotonic for this project, in the development phase as well as for the public presentation.
The installation relies on the MO – Modular Musical Object technology which won the first prize at the 2011 third annual Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition organized by the Georgia Institute of Technology.

This is a collaboration with artist-designer Marguerite Humeau, who is fascinated with scientific experiments and their potential for many narrative opportunities. They are seeking to evolve […]

At Music Hack Day, I met Warren Stringer and Matt Howell and teamed up with the idea of creating a dynamic graphic environment, reacting to facial expressions, as well as voice or instrument sounds.
